Ready. Set. Here we go! Just a little over a month until our area vibrates with the power and excitement of the 60th DAYTONA 500 (February 18th), followed less than a month later by the DeLand Bike Rally (March 10th) and the world famous Daytona Bike Week (March 9 – 18).
These events, coupled with Spring Break, bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to our area, generating millions of dollars in revenue for businesses.
Unfortunately, they also bring crowds, heavy traffic, and a sharp increase in accidents. Data from Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System show that accidents involving all types of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians increase significantly in the month of March. Furthermore, the number of crashes occurring in March has increased steadily in the past five years, from 767 in 2013 to 1031 in 2017.
While the additional traffic and potential for accidents during February and March might seem like a nuisance, the events that bring visitors to this area and the tourists themselves are important to us and our economy. We need to look out for them. That is, we need to drive defensively, aware of the fact that many people on the road are not familiar with the area, many are on vacation driving carelessly, and many are on motorcycles and might be difficult to see.
Despite our best efforts to drive safely, accidents can and do happen. People are seriously injured. Lives are forever changed.
If you or a family member is among the hundreds injured this year in Volusia County, you might be dismayed to find that your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) does not cover all of your medical bills or wages lost due to the accident. That’s when it’s time to contact an experienced automobile accident attorney.
At Simoes Davila, we’ve helped people like you get the compensation they need to pay for their medical care and losses. We want to help you do the same.
